What is the Open-Source AntiMicrobial Stewardship (OSAMS) Project?
The Open Source Antimicrobial Stewardship Project (OSAMS) is a collaborative project to develop a free and open source system for antimicrobial approval and advice in the effort to reduce antimicrobial resistance in the hospital and primary healthcare setting.
The premise of the OSAMS project is to share clinical knowledge to promote the development of relevant clinical decision support pathways for antimicrobial prescribing. The aim is to focus on supporting clinical staff to make the best decisions when prescribing antimicrobials, rather than a focus on regulation.
The OSAMS project template is available to any site with an active subscription to the Australian Therapeutic Guidelines - Antibiotic, and any site is free to update any aspect of the source code they would like under a Creative Commons 3.0 share-alike license with attribution.
The only regulations on use of the application are:
- You provide the project with attribution if you are presenting the results of the application's implementation.
- You do not commercialise on the contents of the source code.
- You maintain an active subscription to the Australian Therapeutic Guidelines - Antibiotic whilst your institution is using the application.
Additional information:
- Can I use a third party to update the application? - YES, you can use your ICT department or any local third party to update the application. The application is written in simple HTML and JavaScript and can be updated by any capable ICT contractor (and in most cases by AMS pharmacists and infectious diseases consultants if you have an interest in ICT).
- Can the application be used on mobile devices? - YES, the application source code even comes with the capacity to save a 'cache' to user's mobile devices so that it works without internet.
- Do I need any special infrastructure to use the application? NO, the application requires only 5mb of space on a server. We ask that you do not put the application in any public facing locations without password protection. This is to prevent outside users accessing information without the proper access rights. Typically sites will opt to place the application on their intranet, library server or to pay for external hosting. If you want to make use of all features of the application (to allow auto email to notify you after a code is generated), then your server will require PHP v5.5+ installed.
